Construction security controls access and helps protect a project from theft, vandalism and unauthorised entry. It supports the site operation, but it does not replace the construction team’s specialist safety responsibilities.
What construction security covers
A brief can include gate control, visitor checks, perimeter patrols, incident records and escalation. CCTV, alarms and physical barriers can support those duties. State the hours and limits of each task rather than asking a guard to “look after everything”.
A gate that must stay staffed cannot be covered continuously by the same officer while that officer patrols a distant compound. Resolve that conflict in the staffing plan.
Separate access control from specialist site duties
Checking whether a vehicle is authorised to enter differs from directing its movement around an active works area. Likewise, logging a visible hazard differs from inspecting lifting equipment or managing an excavation. Confirm competence and responsibility for any specialist duty before adding it to an assignment.

Build the assignment around the project
- Layout: list gates, pedestrian access, compounds and restricted zones.
- Hours: define delivery periods, active shifts and closures.
- Assets: identify plant, tools, fuel and materials remaining after hours.
- People: identify authorised contractors and who approves exceptions.
- Response: provide emergency contacts and escalation instructions.
- Records: specify shift reports and how outstanding issues are handed over.
Combine services with clear responsibilities
Static guarding provides attendance during booked hours. Mobile patrols provide visits. CCTV may record or support monitoring, depending on the agreed service. K9 cover requires assessment of boundaries, public access and welfare.
Agree who receives an alert, who decides what action to take and who may attend. Having several security measures does not automatically mean these responsibilities are connected.
Review the brief as work progresses
New fencing, occupied buildings or different delivery routes can make earlier instructions unsuitable. Update the brief and handover when conditions change. Record incidents and access exceptions so the next review addresses actual gaps.

Does security cover every safety duty?
No. Duties, competence and authorisation must be defined. A general guarding assignment does not establish competence for specialist construction tasks.
Can a package include day and night cover?
Yes, subject to an agreed proposal. The daytime gate brief and overnight patrol brief may be different.
